18 December 1941.

After receiving a report from a reconnaissance aircraft at 0843, which stated that the enemy battlefleet was only 20 miles to the south-west on a course of 180°, Vian decided to increase speed to 29 knots making to the eastward so as to avoid engaging a far superior force, and with the distinct possibility of coming under heavy air attack. This sighting report was later found to be false.

At 0750, Force ‘K’ joined with Neptune and destroyers Kandahar and Jaguar. At 0845, the force was sighted by enemy reconnaissance aircraft. Air attacks began at 1120 by three Ju 88s and three torpedo bombers and were driven off by Hurricane fighters from Malta. At 1500, the entire force, with the Breconshire, arrived Malta. After fuelling, cruisers Aurora, Neptune and Penelope with destroyers Kandahar, Lance, Lively and Havock departed Malta at 1800 to attempt the interception of the Tripoli section of the Italian convoy that was believed to be due to arrive at approximately 0200 on the 19th. Upon leaving Malta, course was set at 196°. Speed 30 knots

At 2245, when 37 miles from Alexandria the destroyer Jervis sighted a submarine on the surface. 15th CS turned away to avoid the possibility of being hit by a torpedo.
